Keeping the Belief Against the Odds
I just left Australia, after attending the official launch of my company there. It culminated on Saturday night with a recognition ceremony, where I was awarded a beautiful trophy for the speed I reached the rank of Double Diamond Director. When I got up to receive the recognition, I got so emotional at one point, I couldn’t even speak, as I tried unsuccessfully, to fight back the tears.
That’s not like me. But the events of the evening conspired to make it so...
You see, I have been to dozens of conventions and conferences where the top leaders are honored. And I’ve received my share of recognition, awards and pins. But for most of those conferences in the early years, I was the guy in the back row, hanging on by a thread.
I would watch person after person go across the stage, wondering what they had that I didn’t; wondering what the real secret was – the one they weren’t telling me. I remember the first convention I went to…
I was a struggling free lance writer at the time, earning about $8,000 a year. The event was in Anaheim, California. I decided to bill myself as a travel writer, and pitched a story to the Chamber of Commerce there. They got me a comp room for two nights at a hotel about 30 blocks away from the convention hotel, and American Airlines comped me a ticket. I remember walking that 30 blocks each way in the summer heat, because I didn’t have cab fare. Thankfully the convention included lunch each day, because those were the only meals I ate. I was so broke it hurt, but watching all those people cross the stage lit up a dream in me that never died. I left feeling ten feet tall and bullet-proof, ready to take on the world.
The following conventions were not so happy. Now the euphoria and idealism were wearing off...
I was doing meetings all the time, spending money, going to events, and my bonus checks were a joke. I would sponsor someone, certain they were my next Diamond Director, only to have them drop out in a couple of months. People didn’t use the products. Duplication wasn’t happening. I gave all those presentations about living your dreams, but I was starting to doubt it was ever going to happen for me and my people.
But I kept going to the conferences and conventions…
I remember driving hours each morning and night, because I didn’t have money to stay in a hotel. Other times I remember rooming with four or six of us, sleeping on the floor, in some cheap dive miles away from the host hotel. But most of all I remember feeling so frustrated, sitting out in the audience while so many other people were getting the big bonus checks, awards, trips, prizes, cars, and recognition.
Fast forward to the other night. We had our managers and senior managers – our beginning ranks – come to the stage and share their “why they are in the business” stories. I heard people talking about staying down the road in budget hotels, six to a room. Others who sold their bed to attend. One of my Directors talked about how bitterly disappointed he was when he finally got the bike he wanted for Christmas as a kid, and it turned out to be a beat up used one.
Speaker after speaker was telling stories that had been my stories. I related and felt for each one of them. Only now, things are different for me…
Now I am the Double Diamond Director. I won the cruise in March. I get $2,000 a month expense allowance, and another two grand a month for a bonus car. I’ve already won the trip to Hawaii for next January. And in a little less than a year, I have over $66,000 a month in RESIDUAL income, whether I ever work another day. And if I did stop working (which I won’t), I have enough trained leaders and duplication going on in the group, that my residual would still crack $100K a month by year’s end.
So now I am the guy walking across the stage getting all the perks, and truly living the lifestyle of my dreams. I am the happiest person I know. Consequently the emotion of it all got to me, and I stood up there behind the lectern, choked up, unable to talk.
But talk I had to do. Because I know there is a whole new generation of people in the back rows, still struggling. Wondering what I have that they don’t. So I told them my story...
The hard days with all the dropouts, no shows, and frustration. The disappointment and fear. The days of wondering how the rent would get paid, how I could afford a product order that month, and parking my beat up car in the back lot, so prospects wouldn’t see what I was driving.
They needed to know about all of the negative programming and ridicule they are likely to face from the people around them. The doubt that their families will try to infect them with, and the dangers of what will happen if they buy into that doubt.
Those people needed to hear – and know – and know that they know – that I have been where they are now, and that they can be where I am now.
And so can you…
